Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Breaks Opening Weekend Record

By Aaron (7/9/06)

This weekend was an great day for the Box Office!  Today (7/9/06), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opening weekend grosses showed a staggering 135 mil during this weekend.  That is more than Spiderman 2's opening weekend back in 2004.  Also, it broke the one day gross record of 55.5 mil, creeping past the record set by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.  You can now put it down as the next big film-- unless you count its bad critic ratings.

During the weekend, ratings stretching from A to F spurred but the money still poured in, breaking two records.  I guess that is proof that not many people really care what critics think because otherwise it wouldn't have done as good as it did.

While we are on the subject of high budget, badly rated movies, let's talk about Titanic.  If you remember when Titanic came out in 1997, it grossed a meak 20 something million and got mostly C and D ratings from critics.  But as word of mouth spread and more and more people were curious to see it, it was #1 for 15 consecutive weekends and ended up being the highest grossing movie in the world, breaking every Box Office record on the planet.  It accumulated 1.24 billion overseas and 600 mil in the states.

Also, it was nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Film Editing.

So its ratings and huge budget are not a bad thing.  This film could break many records and it will most likely pass its successor, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
